Message from Sophie McGeoch
"The Spark reading awards is exactly what we need right now! A clever way of introducing our children to new authors and exciting stories as well as bringing together children across the many schools in Kingston and Richmond - and perhaps, even beyond! Therefore, Meadlands Primary School are delighted to be taking part in this brilliant initiative. A literary hero of mine once wrote: "The books transported her into new worlds and introduced her to amazing people who lived exciting lives. She travelled all over the world while sitting in her little room in an English village." Joining the Spark Awards are indeed a way to broaden our children's horizons and deepen their knowledge and perhaps take them beyond our school gates to unite with others."
Sophie McGeoch is the Headteacher at Meadlands Primary School in Richmond.

Message from Professor Teresa Cremin
"This is a bright Spark of an idea! The Kingston and Richmond Children’s Book Award will not only support teachers but children too! Research evidence shows teachers’ repertoires make a difference to child readers. So it’s time to share the magic and sparkle of reading - together! Do join in!"
Professor Teresa Cremin is a Professor of Education (Literacy) at The Open University in the Faculty of Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies. Teresa has been a practising primary teacher, a staff development co-ordinator in a local authority, and has worked extensively in Higher Education both with initial teacher education students and with practising professionals. Currently her work mainly focuses on research, although she is also involved in teaching and consultancy, leadership, management and knowledge transfer activities.
Teresa is interested in the aesthetic and artistic nature of language and literacy learning and the role and use of creativity in and through language. She has explored children’s imaginative development and the characteristics of ‘possibility thinking’ manifest in the learning engagement of children and the pedagogical strategies of their teachers, as well as the relationship between drama and other forms of oral engagement, and children’s voice in writing. In particular she has documented primary teachers’ knowledge and use of children’s literature and the concept of Reading Teachers - teachers who read and readers who teach (Commeyras et al., 2004) as well as teachers' identities as writers. Teresa is interested in the consequences of teachers' literate identity positioning on their pedagogic practices and the identity positions made available to younger readers and writers in the classroom.
These awards are led by an independent group of people working in education in Kingston & Richmond Schools. Spark! is working closely with AfC and is supported by the Education Leads of the two councils.
WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE SUPPORT OF THE REGENCY BOOKSHOP IN SURBITON AND for CLARE SPENcER DESIGN, WHO PROVIDED our Spark! logo.
